I gotta say... targeting bigger sized bluegills on ultralight gear is quite the good time! Biggest went 10” and plenty over 9” popped them all on little jigs tipped with plastics.

10 inch slab blue :D ! any of them being finicky with the jigs? I found that on some summer days bluegill can be super tricky, but offering them topwater makes em commit rather than just stare and nip.

I've been doing the same in a float tube in various ponds since spring. Small jig tipped with Gulp minnow under a slip bobber. Bluegills, crappies and a few yellow perch. A real gas and the bluegills fight pretty good on the ultralight rig. Last trip even had 3 green sunfish.

Those are beautiful today bluegills, nice job.

FYI - Chris, you may be surprised by the following, what I caught for big ones of yesteryear are no more, I don't think. Going back 50 to 60 years a summertime deep water bluegills were 12" cookie cutters with a bigger ones now and then. They would hang out in 30 or so fow and we would catch them too while targeting trout at 40 fishing with nightcrawlers, day and night.

Agree about it being a blast on the ultralights. We've been hitting them with fly rods as well in local streams and they're a lot of fun on them too.
