The water in the bay in the Port Monmouth area is rust colored. I have never seen it like this before. I had someone tell me its a algae bloom but it doesn't look like any algae bloom i have ever seen before. if anyone has seen this and has an answer please share it. Thanks

Saw the same over the weekend. Seen brown water/algae countless times but never like that. Almost like a rust film on the surface with some black streaks that looked like crude oil. Prop wash was deep rust color.
Sunday afternoon was bad but after a couple tide changes Monday morning was a different animal. Noticeably cleaner but the brown grass on the bottom was thick.

Read that it was an algae bloom called a "mahogany tide" I always thought algae blooms were caused by lots of rain and warmer weather which isn't the case. The temps have been cool and we have had rain but nothing major. So what is actually causing of this? Any ideas?

We've had a wet spring and lots of nutrients have flowed into the bay to feed the algae. The bay gets clearer when we have dry spells.

Found this https://www.cbf.org/blogs/save-the-bay/2018/05/this-month-on-the-bay-mahogany-tide.html
We've had this issue before but never as bad as I've seen recently... Maybe has something to do with the mild winter we had??

I put my boat in at the AH on Tuesday and I was glad I waxed the bottom of my boat the day before. That water was nasty. I felt sorry for the fish in the bay, but the fish out front didn't seem to mind at all.
