Got these out of the bay. Can you eat them, or what would you use them for, bait? Thanks.

They are whelks, used to make scungilli. I tried to steam some, smelled up the house.

Don’t see why a striper wouldnt eat it like it does clams.

Before you eat them check the shellfish harvest charts from the state to make sure you harvested them from water that is safe to eat shellfish from.

But they are delicious. We get them when we are clamming in Great Bay. Steamed, sliced thin, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, parsley, celery and a little red onion makes a great salad.

Scrub the shell clean before you steam them.

They look like Conch to me... Similar to the kind you've probably seen and eaten in the Caribbean but ours a a cold water variety and smaller.

Never ate them up here but I know a commercial clammer that used to fish for them in our area. Said there was a good market for them too, in the Asian Community.

Channeled whelk, in barnegat bay there's a fishery for them , they string pots the same as they do for crabs
