Since Saturday was opening day, I decided to avoid the crowds and hit some quieter water in the morning in search of a big wild brown. Got to my spot early in the freezing rain, and as I was getting suited up another guy pulled up. No biggie, I thought.

I headed down to the first hole, and hooked up quickly to a feisty brook trout.

On my next cast, I had another brookie hit but the hook didn't stick. I decided to check out another part of the hole and let those fish settle. Didn't see anything going on there so I went back to the original spot. As I was walking down, the other guy walked right behind me. I started fishing, and the guy proceeds to stand right in the middle of the tail end of the pool where the brook trout were holding and start flyfishing. Needless to say it shut down that bite. I couldnt believe it. I had one other hit in the pool and decided to move on.

I hopped downstream and hit a new stretch I'd been planning to fish but hadn't. It wasn't long before I found a couple of more aggressive brook trout, bringing one to net.

I walked up on a great looking stretch, and on my first cast a brown shot out of nowhere and swiped at the lure. It took a couple more casts, but he slammed the lure like he hadnt eaten in weeks. The fish had plenty of attitude, and screamed drag as he ran upriver. Suddenly, he spun a 180 and ran right back downriver. The fish began headshaking on top and I took a shot with the net that I shouldn't have. The lure hooks snagged on the net, but the fish was hanging on the outside of the net. One shake of his head and he would have left me with just the lure in the net. I lunged downstream and luckily rolled the fish over into the net. Its was a big male wild brown, probably one of the prettiest male browns I've ever caught.

After that release, I went back to the original pool and caught one more brook trout.

With brown and brook crossed off the list, I decided to meet up with Fast Eddie and the crew for the rainbow to complete the slam. It was a lot of fun to meet up with everyone and hang out, and I managed one small rainbow for the slam.

Sweet parr marks on that rainbow

JD, do you and Eddie keep taking turns catching each others' pet brown trout? What did you name that one? :D

Nicely done on the big brown and the increasingly rare NJ trout trifecta!

thats the way to get-er-done jd some people do not take in the details when they fish you should not stand where the fish are:rolleyes:
