Got and unexpected day off today so I went to the Gorge this morning for some winter trouting and boy I got a work out. Pulled in and immediately realized I forgot my tackle box in my garage (yes I'm an idiot) but luckily I had my pole and a pack of trout magnets. On my way to the water I found someone's dropped strike indicator which was really lucky.

I walked the entire length of the gorge and fished every spot I could. I saw lots of fish and saw plenty of swipes at my trout magnet, but just couldn't connect with a fish. I wish I hadn't forgotten my tacklebox, I had a new plug I was excited to try, but that's fishing! Climbing down steep snow covered banks, walking between spots and scouting for new ones really left me beat.

I'll be back for redemption! One hole I found had 3 solid rainbows and 2 massive browns swimming around in it, and I'm looking to land a brown soon.

Tight Lines all!

I fished above the gorge yesterday. I only caught one 15 inch rainbow. I stopped by the gorge on my way home and I spoke to a couple of guys that just got done fly fishing all day. They said they didn’t catch anything either. Maybe all the melted snow dropped the water temp a few degrees and gave them lockjaw.

Waters low and the Trout are skiddish! If you can see them, they can see you! You gotta creep up on those holes and don’t let your shadow appear over the water. You’ll get em if you keep going! Catch em up man!!!

I learned that the hard way. One if my first times at pequest I'd be wondering why the fish literally swimming up to me wouldn't bite... Lol. I think a bit more highly about their intelligence nowadays.

Keep at it man.. I've left KLG a few times scratching my head wondering where the thousands of trout that they put in there go.

At least you got out there and scouted some good spots for future trips.. Can't catch fish sitting on the couch! Plus its a nice looking area after the snow.

Not bustin chops, but are trout magnets allowed at KLG?

Yes. They're unscented therefore legal.

not for long, the state likes to pass special interest group's suggested regulations for their own gain, so soon it'll all be fly fishing only again, enjoy while you can

You can still tie a mini trout magnet on a fly rod :D

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement fellas! Hopefully gonna get back there early next week for some redemption, what I really need is a pair of waders! I might bring a fly rod next time so I don't get any dirty looks

Ahh, take a bigger spinning rod and enjoy the 'dirty looks'! I like seeing pissed off purists! I make an occasional trip to the 'Artificials Only/No-kill' sections of the Beaverkill in NY with my spinning rod and lures just for the entertainment!

You gave it a good shot! Certainly not easy fishing with the quick onset of actual winter. Once it stabilizes it will pick up. Like Eddie said, be super sneaky!

The south branch is one if my favorite streams to fish , klg gets hammered the fish are easily spooked.my keys to success are try not to wade and if you do go slow stop and let the fish settle down a bit, I've hidden behind trees, boulders and casted from my knees to good looking spots.. stealth is the key.I use as light as possible jigs in black so they drift with current and give them twitches every so often, try fishing holes from different angles also...Good luck
