Caught some sundials while trying to flounder fish...they turned out absolutely delicious, and more importantly, so much more fun to catch than flounder lol, like mini-fluke jigging.
Are they abundant along the shorelines of RB? We went further south, but my final fishing goal of 2017 might just be a "placemat" sundial haha.

Haha surprisingly they are not! Opaque white, more winter flounder-esque than fluke.

Idk if its just me, but before this year I had never even heard of a sundial. Now it seems they're being caught all over the place! Several people I know/watch videos of have caught them in the NJ surf this year.

some years they're thick in Shark River right around now. Some years, they aren't there. Three years ago, I think i must've caught and released 15 sundial in a 2 hour span by the tennis courts. Last year, didn't catch a single one. So, sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not.

I love sundials, aka Windowpane..
They are a great eating fish, as good as Winter Flounder. In my book WAY better than Fluke,, Some years they are very thick in manasquan Inlet around this time of year, and are caught along with Hickory shad at various times as well.. Years ago I have enjoyed some nice light tackle fishing using small bucktails in the inlet and catching Sundials and Hickory shad together.... bob

That sounds like a fun combo trip: shad and sundial!
They are definitely better than fluke...very close to winter flounder, but willing to take a jig. Makes them a winner in my book!

They are a wonderful fish that I have always liked to catch and eat.. Think of them as more of a "cool water" fish .. they are commonly caught in May and June, and then they thin out in somewhat during mid summer.. Then In Oct into Dec they are willing biters once again in s in the bays and rivers.. Some years they are thick and you catch them everywhere, other years they are quite scace.. Only downside to them is that they don't grow big and a 16 incher is a giant.. They are a blast when they are in manasquan Inlet in big numbers along with the Hickory Shad... The fishing can be fast and furious just using a twister tail, or a shad dart, and in very early morning before the boat traffic starts, you might even catch a small striper along with them.. bob

If they are, the locals might not be talking.. Its surprising as they aren't a desirable "game:" fish, but some guys do target them, and keep their mouths shut when they are around.. You might want to ask at some of the sponsor bait/tackle shops
