Had Chris Pugh with friends Eric & Rob out on the NetKeeper for Striped Bass today.
Arrived at the dock and the wind was cranking hard out of the North at 15-20 and outside the Marina it was sloppy. Contemplated canceling but after getting a good ocean report, we headed for Romer. Once on the hook, the guys boxed 1 Keeper and released 4 shorts before the bite abruptly died for us. Went on the hunt again and found cocktail Blues under birds, jigged as many as the guys wanted and then went searching again. Made another move further South to catch the the last of the Outgoing where we managed to get a shot of fish to bite all to ourselves. The guys proceeded to box another 4 keepers and released another 15 fish before the bite died with the tide. Decided to go to the troll to see if we catch one last keeper and after weeding through 5 more shorts and some blues, we put the elusive keeper 6 in the boat for the 3 man boat limit and a 30 total bass day. Many 25" - 27" fish went back today. We had this cute Hybrid too that went back. I also included a picture of Rob with our new Shimano Boat Rod Combos. The Ocean flattened nicely as the day went on. The guys worked hard and never stopped fishing through the slow periods all day and their efforts paid off.

Nice trip Captain.
With the broken stripes the cute guy appears to be a Hybrid, but is it ? Never knew that Hybrids enter the Salt. ![]()

Quote:
Larry, after consulting with my firends at the ALS, here is their response Is that a Hybrid? - I cannot say definetively - but if I had to guess - being that you caught him very far from any fresh water - I would have to say no. Hybrids do have a marked preference for lower salinities, and if given the chance, they would not stay in a high oceanic salinity, as can be found "along Sandy Hook". Broken - stripedness or a "pointier" snout, are not definetive ID characters for hybrids either, although hybrids often display these characteristics. - A tissue sample and genetic analysis could however tell one from the other definetively.
