Default Take a Reporter Fishing

If you are out on a stream or lake for opening day and have a camera (most of us do) please take some pictures of the fishing activity around you. Get pictures of kids or families or just happy anglers holding a fish or a stringer of fish or just a picture of someone who is fishing. Then, send those pictures to your local newspaper with a short blurb about the who and where. We have no newspapers as such anymore with state-wide subscribers.

The local papers are still somehow in business and it is through them that we can promote our issues and seek new blood within our ranks. Try to convince your local paper to publish your pictures and to perhaps write a short followup to the opening day of trout fishing in your area. Fishing boards like this one are great for those of us who actually fish, but the average person who might be persuaded to go fishing won't read these posts. Believe it or not, we need more adults to take up the sport so they can encourage others in their families to join them. Keep the fishing tradition alive.

Great idea!!

We've got a lot of things working against our sport but there are some bright spots in our future I've seen first hand.

A close friend of mine has a teen age son in high school and he started a fishing club, a first for that school. To my surprise it filled up fast and is one of the more popular clubs.

Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs is another great example http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/hofnodnj.htm

Shark River Surf Anglers and the Spring Lake Kids Contest http://www.sharkriversurfanglers.com/contest.htm

Great to see kids getting into fishing. It's been a passion for me ever since I was introduced to the sport as a kid by my uncle. An amazing gift he passed along to me. It keeps me grounded, relieves my stress and keeps me smiling by enjoying the company of great friends who share the same passion.

A gift that keeps giving.

It's a start, Mark. I know the Division sends out press releases and some are published entirely and others are edited. The APP will no doubt cover the Spring Lake event. They do a great job by providing enough agate and photos. No one brings things closer to home than the hometown publications that still have home subscriptions. Those are the papers that will entertain local stories about local people. Send your pictures in and tell your story about fishing in your town or a nearby location. Pictures of kids holding a fish are always an attention getter. If you feel that you want to share our sport with others, and not just other fishermen, get your cameras clicking and get the word out.

That's a good start, Eddie. Try the Suburban News or the Cranford Chronicle or Westfield Leader. Email the photos to the editors. Maybe they will use them. Maybe they won't. It's an effort worth pursuing.
