Default Carp Question

I went out pike fishing in the P yesterday. I threw out a gold color phoebe. I hooked up with what I assumed was a pike. Turned about to be a big carp. It never got on shore after a 5 min fight, my question is did I snag this fish or did it hit the lure? From everything I know about carp fishing ( which isn't a lot) they won't hit lures, is that true?

I've snagged a bunch over the years, but I have had a few times where it clearly hit the lure. This one hit a 4" swimshad in the middle of winter. Also had them on crankbaits.

They rarely hit lures but when they're very hungry, I can't see why they wouldn't, especially if the lure resembles an invertebrate since they feed on those a lot. Maybe even small slow moving fish.

from what i've heard they will hit lures i've even heard of guys specifically targeting them with fly fishing. I've only targeted them with corn but it looks like he tried to suck your lure in by the back! def tried to eat it, they will hit lures.

I caught lots of carp on lures. They like small yellow jigs. I landed a 24 lber on a 1/16 oz leadhead jig with twister tail on 4 lb test line. Took a half hour to land it.

In my lake I can catch them on the fly rod with a white streamer... that said, they probably think its a piece of bread since some people here feed them regularly.
