I was wondering the same thing. I put a call in to the Big, got the machine, waiting to hear back.

I ended up with six porgies. For those six porgies it was not worth the damage that was done to the black seabass. No more offshore porgy fishing for me again, when seabass is closed.

You would be amazed how many anglers (or mates) for that matter do not know how to properly vent a Black Sea bass so they do not float. I participated in the Rutgers Black Sea bass study last fall and learned a lot from Dr. Doug Zemeckis and his team of scientists studying the barotrauma on this species.

I will ask Doug to upload his final report for everyone. On one trip alone, we tagged 380 sea bass at the Baltimore wrecks.

We didn't have any venting tool. Mates did not have any. So we put a hole into the swim bladder. Some went straight down but a few stay floated. I was on another boat by Point Pleasant Beach. The crew was equipped with vent needles, more like a hypodermic needles. They vented every seabass that came up.
