Re: 14.3 lb Blackfish Swims to live another day
Thanks to all for the positive feedback. Picture did not do the fish justice as I have had pictures of 10 lb fish that have looked bigger than this one. My friend urged me to keep him and get him mounted. I hope to catch one bigger one day if I am lucky enough to have my crab presented at the right place at the right time so mounting him was not an option for me.
I also remeber recent post of blackfish that was kept alive and donated to the Aqurium in CT as well as fishing with Capt. MONTY out of Ocean City, MD last year and seeing all the great work he does with the tagging program and releasing all big females inspired me to let him swim again. The Big guy put up a great battle and deserved a second chance especially being he was caught in our local waters and not further south were fish like this are more common. I had enough fish to give to my parents and sister and still have one for myself. Next time I may not be in such a generous mood and the only water he will see will be boiling in a big pot on the stove. MVP |

Re: 14.3 lb Blackfish Swims to live another day
You did the right thing on the release. You don't need to kill the fish to get a mount - just bring a photo and measurements and get a fiberglass reproduction which will last forever and look like the real thing. As far as eating him/her I am sure three 5 pounders would taste better. I only hope if I am ever blessed to catch one that size that I release it. Good job!!!!

I think you got the good karma telling me I was gonna get the hog over 10 lbs as a newbie- picked up one just a shade bigger for yourself!
