Default Is 17lb test too thick for bass & pike?

I plan on fishing soon in the Passaic River for pike & bass. The reel is was planning on using currently has 17lb test on it. Is 17lb test thick enough to cause the fish to shy away?

Load up with 15-30 lb braid. Tie on a barrel swivel, then 12-18" of 50+ lb fluoro carbon, then your lure of choice. Pike will sever 17 lb mono like a hot knife thru butter. Bass won't shy away from the heavy fluoro and you will really minimize any bite offs from pike with the heavy, hard fluoro. Win-win...
