Default Barnegat lighthouse fishing??

Im heading down near the light house this weekend to help a friend put his jetskis in the water. I figured since i was in the area Id try some surf fishing near the lighthouse. Any advice on where to go, bait selection,or what is in that area would be great. Thank you for any tips and advice.

Default Re: Barnegat lighthouse fishing??

Got this report dated May 13th from a non-sponsor charter boat:

I was last out Saturday for an evening trip. On the hook we kept busy either cleaning the lines of snot grass or the hooks of skates. The snot grass is actually a form of algae and is an indicator species meaning the presence / abundance of it can be used as a gauge of water quality. Nutrient enrichment of the bay from run off is responsible for these algae blooms. Now back to the fishing report. Moving west we then worked poppers for some hard fighting 2-4 pound blues. For those that never tried this you do not know what you are missing. It is so much fun watching the water explode as a hungry bluefish attempts to eat your popper. This action will only get better over the next week.

May 7th- same charter captain:

Fluke season opened this past weekend and most I talked to had a tough time around the bay. Incoming water was too cold while outgoing had loads of snot grass. The bay is holding schoolie bass on the flats and in the channels and blues have shown up. With the cool weather we have had most days the blues are not chewing as well as they should but there is I see no problem getting a few to bend the rods. We have started to see some of the larger post spawn breeding bass (20 – 40 pounds) show up off the beach to feed on bunker. Whether or not you want to fish the bay or ocean right now there are plenty of opportunities.
