Wishing all a banner year on this 2012 Fluke opener. But I have a question that you may help me with......I had the opportunity to be in Newport, RI for a few days this week, and for the first time in my 60+ years of fishing I witnessed a good catch of squid in Newport Harbor, off the bridge to Goat Island. I've seen squid offshore in the boat lights and caught them by squid jigs and net. This fishery, however, is all jigging with light spin gear, each with 2 jigs (one pink and the other blue or green), with a 1/2Oz. sinker. The catch was on, day and night. I was told that when the water warms up, the bridge will be lined with fishermen, shoulder to shoulder, each with a generator and quartz light. Full 5 gal. buckets is not uncommon. Has anyone seen this kind of fishery in coastal NJ? Please advise me, so I can gear up. Thank you, Papa

I've seen what you are talking about up in Newport, no we don't have that kind of fishery down here. We do have inshore squid, but they don't ball up here like they do in RI

I also just came back from Goat Island in Newport, RI and I like the squid action. I was up their doing some serious squid jigging off the (Calamari) causeway bridge for the past two weeks. Youtube has songs about the experience it is a big draw for RI/Newport. I had my Coleman lantern and various jigs. People have gas electrical generators with halogen light with them lighting up the squid action. Up in RI the party boats go out for Squid as well. Thus far the squid actions hasn't build up to its peak yet. Fresh caught squid is amazing the fresh fried calamari is very sweet in taste.
I was thinking the same is there any squid action in NJ? The Gambler with its underwater lights does a mixed wreak trip on Sunday nights in July and August. They report that those who target squid do very well. I plan on going then. If anyone has any insight into inshore NJ squid action please pass it on!
